The Stems -
Mushroom Soup: The Citadel Years
Mushroom Soup: The Citadel Years"The Stems came roaring out of Perth in the mid Eighties with a sound and
style that definitively captured the spirit and enthusiasm of sixties garage
music - lurching fuzz-tone guitars, brooding organ and solid gold garage-trash!
At the core of it all though The Stems wrote some awesome songs, made great
records and put on exciting live shows. Tracks like Make You Mine, Love Will
Grow and Tears Me In Two mark them out as one of the truly great Australian
acts of the Eighties.
Mushroom Soup - The Citadel Years brings together these break-through singles,
their debut EP Love Will Grow, the video for Tears Me In Two, previously
unreleased demos and alternative song versions all on one disc. This collection
captures a great band at the peak of its powers."
ID -
The Inner Sound of the ID
The Inner Sound of the ID"The Inner Sounds of the Id album features rock music with Oriental influences,
played in various time signatures like 17/8, 20/8, and 7/4 time, as well as
straight-ahead blues/rock in 4/4 time. You will hear the rock and roll roots
drifting into garage, beat, psychedelic and progressive sounds -- powerful
and unique -- far ahead of its time. The title track, longer than 10 minutes,
you will never forget. It is an excursion, introducing the upcoming hypnotic
beat and psychedelic sound. A cosmic sitar and meditative vocals intensify
the mystical and floating vibrations of music, coming from the Id's inner space.
The Beatles with Sgt. Pepper, and also the Rolling Stones with Their Satanic
Majesties Request went, little later than The Id, into similar directions. This
well-produced stereo 2LP set contains extended musician information,
(a second LP) contains 10 bonus tracks with outtakes from the album recording
sessions. This is an ultimately rewarding listening experience on the highest
level of creativity and musicianship."
Oxford Circle -
Live At The Avalon Ballroom 1966
Live at the Avalon 1966"Fourteen of the 18 tracks on this disc were recorded live in San Francisco in
1966, in fidelity that was good even by the standards of 1997. As such, it's
a godsend for psychedelic fans, as the band released only two official tracks,
which were themselves hard to find on reissue. That said, the music doesn't
quite live up to the legend, though one can see that it was sufficiently exciting
for live audiences of the era. It's split fairly evenly between British Invasion
covers of groups like the Yardbirds, Them and the Animals, and group
originals in a similar style. Though there are flashes of psychedelic mayhem
in the guitar work particularly, it isn't as weird as the B-side "Mind Destruction"
(a largely formless instrumental built around feedback) might have led
collectors to expect, and the original tunes aren't so memorable. The set is
embellished by both sides of the "Foolish Woman"/"Mind Destruction" single,
as well as a couple of unreleased studio tracks from 1967 that have sessionman
Mac Rebennack (aka Dr. John) on organ.
